Monty, Goosen Heat Up Ibom Golf Classic
World number nine golfer and seven times European Golfer of the year, Colin Montgomerie arrived Nigeria for the commissioning of Nigerias latest golf resort in Uyo Akwa Ibom state capital,
“Monty” as he popularly called rode in a motorized cart with the state governor Obong Victor Atah for a facility tour in which himself an Africa’s second most prized golfer, South African-born Retief Goosen and Nancy Lopez sized up the course.
Monty who had had a first contact with Nigeria in his hey days as a pro when competing at the Ikoyi club in Lagos for the Nigerian Open said he was happy to be back in the country.
“This is actually my second time in Nigeria and I am happy to identify with this project.”
More than 100 media persons were present at the world press conference to formally tee-off the two day activities that opens what is perhaps the biggest golf course, South of Nigeria.
The facility which is an all green facility from start (one of the few that started on that note in the country), is expected to be a course to beat when all the hazards, greens and other features of the course are fully in place in few years to come.
Already its in-built five star Le-Meridien Hotel, which is a walk away from the hole one tee-box has set apart from all the 52 golf course in the country.
Apart from other things the course also boasts of the first on-course heli-pad and an in-built jetty which the state governor says is fifteen minutes away to the TINAPA by speedboat.
The foreign players apart from proffering their candid view of the edifice are also to be engaged in an exhibition game with some selected local professionals in an exhibition game on an 18-hole play today.
Top among the Nigerian players are Zaria-based Nojeem Sofela, Lateef Lasisi from Abeokuta Golf Club who once won the Nigerian Open that Monty competed for, Dominic Andrew and other selected seniors of the Nigerian Tour.
