Ikoyi Ladies Pro-Am :
Sunny Side of a Rainy Round
The lady captain of Ikoyi Golf club, Mrs Adegboyega may still have a lot catching up to do with her game, but she is ahead in a lot of other things : one of such is the concern she has for professional golfers.
Last wednesday 32 pros defied the risk of missing their practise round at the on-going four–day Pro-Am in Otukpo (a ranking event) to honour a ladies'
invitational at the golf section of Ikoyi Club 1938 in Lagos.
The fact that 'Teco' (Gboyega Oyebanji), Ikeja based former Nigeria number one won is almost taken for granted. It is almost like his birthright or for the sake of sport : he is fully inform.
The one day Pro-Am, given the warmth with which Mrs Adegboyega and her team treated the profession could pass for the best event the pros has played in years. Not minding that the money at stake was a mere N600,000 (about the first prize for the President Open in asaba last November), the love and respect that the players were greeted was whooping.
Nduka Bernard is an Ibadan based professional who has a teller job with Sterling bank and has not been touring with his colleagues for obviously finding more confort with his ancilliary calling. 'I love golf and I am a professional but being a banker can be more challenging and that is why I hardly come around to play the Tour. But I still keep my membership by apying my dues'.
Since the Pro-Am Nduka has been having a rethink on coming back to golfing and he says he love the idea that the ladies just set out in the first place to host the professionals.
Chief Mrs Nike Adamolekun, Dr Mrs Marinho both former lady captain led the army of lady golfers along with Mrs Adegboyega and her entire excutive in a rain soaked round where they paired the professional in the one day event.
According to the Lady captain ; 'We felt it was only proper to deal more friendly with professional who are our teachers and are still our teachers. This we eblieve is our own way of contributing to the betterment of their living conditions and I hope the captains that come after me would be able to sustain this'.
The cheering of the pros underbelly a lot of emotions, one that see them being given some measure of relevance again on a course that bore the signatures of some crucial moments of Nigeria's golf history. And in most cases the crucial moments of their lives too.
Coming two weeks after an earlier stint ther at the Nigeria Cup and perhaphs two more weeks to another gloriuous moment : The PGAN Tour first event, the Ikoyi Club may again live up to its billing as the 'Temple of Golf and Golf Crafts in Nigeria' now that the priests are coming back home, the spirit may follow too.
The event was supported by CMCL Golf, DHL, Air Flow among other retinue of supporters.
