
Experinced Korblah Dims Edet's Shine
Except for the final day, unattached Umoh Edet led everyday of the just concluded LNI Golf Tournament in Benin before evetually falling for the wits of the more experinced Ghana-born Emos Korblah who pocketed the 200,000 naira first prize cheque.
"I knew I should have won. I made a mistake I shoould not have made on the 17th (71st) and before I knew it I was tailing him. It was really painful but I have learn my lesson" Edet said after the game.
Edet opened the tournamnet with a 70, one under par. he consolidated with another two under on the next two days to tie jointh leader with Emos Korblah on the final round on friday. By hole seven Edet has gained four shot advantage over Korblah before the game went on a decline for him. "I beat Edet with experience. he is a very strong player" said Korblah who also have won Nigerian Open before at Ikoyi Club.
Ikeja-based former Nigeria number one Gbeoyega Oyebanji finished in distance third shooting 292, twelve shots behind Edet who had finished 280 after 72 holes at the Benin Golf club in Edo State.The event is the first professional event hosted at the club since the 13 holes course has been upgraded to an all gree event.
In the category one amateur event, however, the winner between two blood brithers was judged over sudden death descision for the first place. Friday Akpodiete lost to his elder brother Austin after to emerge winner at that category. Both players represented Shell golf Club in Ogunnu.
The event was in commemoration of governor Lucky Igbinedion's 50th birthday celebration and was rounded off with the amateur round yesterdayb with the governor promising more support for the game especially from the in-coming government. Osun state governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Major General Patrick Aziza (rtd) and Chief Tom Ikimi are part of special guest at the golf event.
