Godfrey Holds Down Odoh and Korblah to Win ULO
After six extra holes of play-offs, 'suddendeath' and drama that earned Christian Godfrey the 4th ULO Championship, one more thing became obvious. And that is the fact that the clock is ticking away from Oche Odoh’s invincible reputation on the Nigeria PGA Tour.
before his eyes and on his most cherished stage ( the IBB International Golf and Country Club) in two consecutive weeks Oche has failed to pick any honour in front of home fans who cheered every of his drives, chips and putts.
“Some days are not just your day" he said after the tension soaked decider that confirmed Godfrey as the 2007 ULO winner.
As for Godfrey, it was clearly his day despite the ups and downs that characterized his play that day. "I struggled through the final rounds with fever and I almost gave up, but I just found out that I was not scoring too bad even with my condition, which was why I stayed. I would cherish this because it is a hard earned one."
Godfrey who was also playing at his home course as Oche has opened his four round chase of the N200,000 prize purse with a 69, three under par and by the end of the 36th holes he was sitting clear with five under gross.
On the way to winning Godfrey had Oche to battle who was tied with Korblah two shots short of his five under par after the third days score.
" I knew I had a lot of advantage and the two players are very good all I just need to do was to save my pars, which I did very well until the game came crashing on me four holes to go."
By hole 15 he had lost the edge he came to the round with and all were squared. “I knew there was trouble then, but I was ready to take whatever that followed because of my failing health at that time."
The week before, at the Pinnacle Matchplay Championship, Oche had knocked him out on a painful ground in a very tough semi-final duel and the stage that was set seem to be the chance to give him a reply while on another ground, the ravaging Ghanaian star Emos Korblah lurks too.
“I just decided to give it my best" he said.
And his best took the game though the 18th and all were still squared at four under par 284 each. The officials declared anther four playoff holes (15-18) which did not yield a Champion still until "suddendeath" was declared which ended after two holes. Oche bogied the first to drop off before Korblah too gave away a cheap putt to leave Godfrey with his first win in over two years on the Nigerian PGA Tour.
"I will cherish this" he said.
