A Piece of Nigeria Golf History?
No one has doubted that golf was a foreign sports, but how and when it crept in? We are not sure.
As argument has raged for the game's root in Holland, China before finally settling for Scotland, we have our own version; in Nigeria.
Well it depends on who you are speaking with: in Abeokuta traces of 'tee-box' like structures on an undated piece of work suggested to be the first. Kaduna Golf Club poses with 1928 in its history, What of Lagos?.. enhm.... 1938, so says Ikoyi Club history. But then, history also had it that the club existence predated that, it formerly occupied the present spot of TBS (Tafawa Balewa Square) but then, any proof? document? photo?
Again, lets consider this piece of trophy that was presented by Elder Dempster Shipping Line in 1913 at a golf tournament in Sapele, in 'Oil River' area (now known as Niger Delta).
It beat any proof of a formal date tied to golf tournament, and with the possibility of the golf course even being in existence earlier than the date, it may actually be the first. Can we zoom on Sapele Golf Course for a while maybe we can trace a document-able history of golf from there.
It perhaps may be our St. andrew.
note the picture was taken on Monday, August 30, 2010 thanks to the captain of the club, Mr Austin Utiome
